This article describes activities on Santa Cruz, California's municipal wharf.
Activities in coastal towns tend to focus out toward the water and Santa Cruz is no different. Following are some ideas on how to spend an hour or a day enjoying one of Santa Cruz’s most famous attractions. Eating on the WharfThe wharf is home to several restaurants worth a visit. For a casual meal, visitors can stop at Stagnaro Brothers fish market for clam chowder or shrimp ceviche to go. At the Dolphin, diners can enjoy their fresh seafood outside on one of numerous picnic tables or inside the homey dining room. For dessert, Marini’s serves homemade fudge, huge chocolate dipped strawberries, and incredibly thick milkshakes. Drinking on the WharfVisitors who just want to enjoy a drink might try the top shelf margaritas at Olitas, a Mexican restaurant with an incredible view. Sports fanatics should head over to the bar at Gilbert’s Seafood Grill where they can watch the game and drink a beer. For a Santa Cruz wine tasting experience, wharf visitors can head upstairs to the Beauregard Vineyards tasting room. Wildlife on the WharfOn some days, the sound of the wharf’s sea lions can be heard from downtown. Visitors can watch the pudgy creatures relax on the wharf pilings or go for one of their daily swims. Pelicans and seagulls will do their best to distract people from their sea lion gazing, especially if there is any food nearby. The truly lucky might even catch a glimpse of a whale. Activities on the WharfVisitors can increase their chances of spotting whales and other sea creatures up close by renting a kayak from Venture Quest. Alternatively, Stagnaro arranges whale watching and fishing trips from the wharf. Pier fishing is another popular local pastime, as is simply gazing out on the gorgeous California coastline. Events on the WharfThere are numerous events held on the wharf throughout the year. The most famous event is Woodies on the Wharf. Woodies are early to mid twentieth century classic surf wagons named for their wooden bodies. Another popular event, Art on the Wharf gives local artists the chance to display their talents. Visitors lucky enough to be in town on the 4th of July can watch as Santa Cruzans set off a bevy of fireworks from local beaches and boats. More on Santa Cruz
