The Queen Mary As A Luxury Liner
The Queen Mary has a long history that has included the trauma of serving the United States during World War II. The gigantic ship made her maiden voyage in 1936. During her heyday, the ocean liner transported the world;'s rich and famous personalities, including The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Mary Pickford and Sir Winston Churchill. The upper classes considered the ocean liner to be the only civilized way to travel.
World War II Service
Luxury travel ceased when World War II broke out in 1939. The Queen Mary was painted gray and transformed into a troopship, transporting military personnel across the ocean. During her military career, the Queen Mark was called "The Gray Ghost." She served the United States well. By the end of World War II, more than 800,000 troops had been carried and the ship had traveled over 600,000 miles. As the war action came to an end, the Queen Mary transported over 22,000 war brides and children to the United States and Canada. These trips were called the "Bride and Baby Voyages.
After the war, the Queen Mary was refurbished and once again transformed into an elegant ocean liner, with weekly service traveling between New York, Cherbourg and Southampton. By the early 1960's transatlantic cruises were falling out of fashion. Travelers were choosing speedier and more modern air travel. The ship was used for some occasional cruises, but did not have the amenities of the more modern ships. In 1967 The Queen Mary was withdrawn from service.
