MayStar's countdown at the Ruby Room in Downtown San Diego Hillcrest stirs a crowd for its electrifying nightlife event.

Inside the Ruby Room, a sports bar turned goth dive for MayStar’s NYE FashionWhore event, was like another world of its own. Loud WTF music, and what that might be is freaky disco music playing through the speakers for the guests on the dance floor and for the very distinctly dressed live-mannequins who were strutting the walkways to the beat of the techno. Three monitors behind the DJ’s table broadcasted the fashion show in real time. With both pool tables heavily covered with champagne glasses, and prom-out balloons filling the ceiling, it seemed like everybody was beginning to feel the New Year’s Eve vibe.

PopNoir: MayStar's 18 + Club Experience

An eerie garnet lighting painted guests faces as they entered the Ruby Room, located deep within Hillcrest, a sprawling community compared to the packed innards of downtown San Diego where Hillcrest resides next to. The setting looked like it came straight out of a noir film with an unlit neon sign on some homeowner’s rooftop flickering periodically and the streets nearly deserted except for a few stragglers inhabiting the sidewalks on their way or out of their way to some New Year’s Eve affair.

Appropriately enough, Pop Noir is MayStar’s popular 18 + event for indie scene-sters who want to dress up and party. May is the other half to her band, MayStar, a part of her ongoing club promoting/songstress/modeling/designer career. Her events usually cater to a diverse crowd by providing guests with a fashion show and DJ’s to keep the loud techno music pumping the whole night long. The designers are mostly local indie designers whom like the music, like their style to be LOUD and fun.

Introducing—FashionWhore

FashionWhore, Pop Noir’s sister event, is a 21 and up affair that May Star also hosts with the same setup except for the advertisements for free drinks. And with New Year’s on the way, MayStar also had her own idea of fun.

This year’s New Year’s Eve theme was prom attire from any decade. Dress code was purely optional, but for those who wanted to go all out the option was there. The idea was to have fun--not to be stuffed up in some couture outfit. The crowd was a mixture of eccentricity, from jeans and jackets to full blown party dresses.

Indie Seamstresses Makes this Indie Event Electrify

Yet before it was time for the countdown to start, and with the balloons already popping, what promised to be a full blown fashion show became an indie event with the models strutting the walkway with outfits by Miss Alphabet and Nuclear Designers. These designers showcased indie designs at their best. Styles derived from the 50’s and 70’s, wardrobe of tanks and tube dresses in all bright hues, lit up the dark atmosphere of the club.

And although prom is a formal affair, where you dress up and have fun, there were no formalities allowed at this NYE party. With all sorts of guests crashing the dance floor and great music pumping through the speakers, be sure that each of your FashionWhore/Pop Noir experience be different and unique.
