There are many great family oriented attractions within a short car ride from Lake Tahoe.
Although there is a wealth of fun things to do with kids in Lake Tahoe such as hiking , horseback riding, playing at the beach, etc., there are even more family oriented attractions just a short distance from South Shore. Family Fun At Virginia City, NevadaMosey on over to the quaint Old West town of Virginia City where wooden sidewalks still exist. Families can pan for gold, take a ride on a historic steam locomotive, enjoy a trolley ride around town or visit one of the towns many museums. For train enthusiasts, a fun stop is the Nevada State Railroad Museum located at 2180 S. Carson St. Admission is $4:00 for adults and free for kids 0-17. Exhibits are both indoors and outdoors and include seven restored steam engines. Kids can enjoy train rides on the weekends from May through September. The cost is $5:00 for adults and $3:00 for kids 6-11. The Children's Museum of Northern NevadaLocated at 813 N. Carson St. in Carson City, the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada has numerous exhibits that kids will enjoy. Younger kids can dress up in costumes, play at Smith's grocery store, or work in the Carson Tahoe emergency room, to name a few. Teens can have a blast at the MAZE Teen Virtual Reality Game. Families can visit the astronomy exhibit and there's even a special area for toddlers. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada is open daily from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Toddlers are free, while children 2-13 are $3:00 and adults 14+ are $5:00. The Nevada State Museum In Carson CityA treat for both adults and kids is the Nevada State Museum at 600 N. Carson St. The lower level consists of a walk-through of a working mine. This exhibit is rather dark, so parents should take caution if they have young children who are afraid of the dark. The Nevada State Museum also has a natural history section, Native American artifacts and a walk-through of the Old West town. The building the museum is housed in is the former U. S. branch mint building. Visitors can see where silver dollars were once stamped. The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. year round except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Admission is $6.00 for adults. Kids 17 and under are free! Fun Things To Do At North Shore, Lake Tahoe With KidsDuring the summer months, consider taking a rafting ride in Truckee, California. Several rafting companies exist with everything from easy rafting trips for families with young children to wilder rides for families with older children. Equipment is provided. Just be sure to bring the sunscreen! When traveling to Lake Tahoe and surrounding areas with kids, consider giving each child a one time use camera.
