California’s Best Firework Displays on Independence Day

Fourth of July means grilling, long weekends, and fireworks. Read below for the best fireworks in California.

As California communities’ continue to ban individual fireworks displays, this list can help identity the go-to fireworks show throughout the Golden State.

Lights on the Lake in Tahoe

The alpine lake straddling Nevada and California is best-known as a ski resort, but the year-round mountain resort is extraordinarily beautiful in the summertime. The region takes July 4th to a whole new level, and the American Pyrotechnics Association rank South Shore’s Firework displays as “one of the top five displays in the nation.” The fireworks are visible all over town, but to ensure a fantastic viewing, check out the sparkling event from the pristine lake. For an elegant evening. board South Lake Tahoe’s paddle wheelers Tahoe Queen or M.S. Dixie II for front-row seats over dinner. For a more inexpensive option, head to Nevada Beach State Park with on-site barbecues, camping and sandy shoreline. The fantastic show is scheduled to begin at 9:45 pm.

American Spirit of Freedom at the Rose Bowl

Pasadena’s traditional 4th of July celebration at the Rose Bowl has been going on for more than 80 years. “Americafest” is touted as the biggest and best fireworks show in Southern California. The all-day celebration includes concerts from the Drum Corps International, food, and a patriotic fireworks display. Tickets are on sale now, and start at $13.00 each.

Fireworks Extravaganza in Marina del Rey

Fireworks and the beach go hand-in-hand, and the firework display over the ocean is a favorite of Los Angeles residents. Fireworks are launched from a floating barge in the main channel of the Marina. Come early (most parking lots are full by 6 pm), bring lawn chairs, drink a bottle of wine, wear a hooded sweatshirt (the beach breeze can be cool) and settle in for an evening of fireworks. The big show starts at 9:00 pm

Independence Day at Big Bear Lake

California’s fifth-largest 4th of July fireworks display happens at Big Bear Lake in the mountains above Los Angeles. After a picnic dinner at one of the many parks, enjoy the fireworks which are viewable from most places throughout Big Bear Valley, or even better a boat on the lake. The 30-minute show starts at 8:45pm.

Big Bay Fireworks in San Diego

The Port of San Diego is the “Big Kahuna” of fireworks display. The fireworks are best viewed from a boat or land at Shelter Island, Harbor Island or North San Diego Bay, and the 16-minute show begins at 9:00 pm sharp. The Old Show Trolley is offering free shuttle service and free parking lots for Harbor Island and Shelter Island; of course, paid parking lots are also available. Shuttle service begins at 5:30 and will run continuously.
