Cheap Los Angeles hotels can be found if you look around, whether you want to stay Downtown, mid-Wilshire, Hollywood, Westside or anywhere else in LA.

Hotels in LA aren't all expensive, unless you want to stay somewhere upmarket like Beverly Hills. There are cheap Los Angeles hotels in most areas, including downtown, Hollywood, mid-Wilshire and other locations close to the major city sights.

Here's a selection of recommended Los Angeles hotels that will keep you close to the action but won't break the bank.

DOWNTOWN

Hotel Stillwell

Rooms here are mostly less than $100 a night, with suites a little over depending on the season. The Stillwell is a very simple and basic hotel, with a TV and fridge in the rooms but few other frills. It's clean and well-run, though, has its own good Indian restaurant, and is close to the Museum of Contemporary Art in a good neighborhood.

Rita Milner

Milner Hotels claim to be the world's first hotel chain, though they only cover Detroit, Boston, Raleigh, and Los Angeles. Here they have a great location not too far from the LA Convention Center, and although the rooms are not luxury, they're perfectly fine and a real bargain at usually less than $100 a night.

HOLLYWOOD

Best Western Hollywood Hills Hotel

Although it's part of the Best Western group, this is a very personal family-run hotel. There's an older building that has some big typical hotel-style rooms, and a new motel-style section with a pool. There's a Hollywood feel to the décor, and a nearby Metro Line means Universal Studios is very easy to get to from here. Free parking is a bonus.

MID-WILSHIRE

Beverly Laurel Motor Hotel

This is the motel LA-style, with its basic and inexpensive rooms given an Art Deco makeover so that it's a fun place to stay. Rooms are less than $100 and there are sometimes deals to be had. There's also a small courtyard pool and a great next-door diner that stays open till late.

WESTSIDE/BEVERLY HILLS

The Farmer's Daughter

A fun name for a fun place, right across from CBS Studios and not far from Museum Row. It's got a country-style feel to it, but with added pizzazz, and its regular visitors love it. Rooms are probably going to be in the $125-150 range, there's a bar and restaurant (the French rustic-style TART), and it's just a great place to hang out.
