Clean Showers, Bathrooms, and River Water Attracts Travelers off 101

The Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area in Leggett California has a day use area as well as a full functional campground. It is conveniently located just off the Redwood highway; highway 101and is easy to locate. With over 150 campsites in three separate campground areas covering over 1,000 acres; Standish-Hickey is the perfect place to stay the night in a tent, trailer or RV.
Costs and Amenities:
The campground has six clean and convenient bathrooms three of which are equipped with quarter operated showers. The showers are indoors, they are large and comfortable allowing one to have a hot shower in the midst nature.
For seven dollars a bundle, campers may purchase high-quality dry firewood from the friendly park rangers. Campsites cost twenty dollars a night and they are well worth the expense. Each site is fairly large and clean; they are outfitted with a functional fire pit and picnic table.
Just outside the boundaries of the recreation area there is a small general store where one can purchase a variety of items ranging from hot dogs to tooth brushes. Also, there are several souvenirs available at this shop for any one who wishes to purchase something to remember their trip.
Attractions and Recreational Opportunities:
Stationed along the south fork of the Eel River, one can sunbathe on the rocky river bank while listening to the calming sound of the water. One can float down the gentle river in any inflatable device or swim in the fresh luke-warm water.
Fishing is allowed on the river however; there are not many large fish. Instead, the river is littered with trout fry and adolescent fish about four inches in length. They are a spectacle to watch and will quickly gather around the bare feet of a brave individual.
There are numerous hiking trails in or around the park which wind along Eel river or deep within the redwood forest. Although the redwoods aren’t as huge and ancient as those growing in redwood national park, they are a spectacle nonetheless.
There are a variety of unique plants and animals that live and grow within Standish-Hickey. Salamanders and Gardner Snakes make their homes along the river bank in large numbers. It is fun to observe them in their natural environment as they scurry around and swim in the water.
Important Things to Remember When Visiting:
You may not gather fallen wood from the recreation to use as firewood, you could be fined. Collecting firewood is strictly prohibited, so one must purchase or pack in anything he or she wishes to burn.
In addition to collecting wood, one cannot take any of the rocks, plants, or animals away from the recreation area. In fact, everything should be respected and left in its natural state. Observation succeeds over participation at Standish-Hickey causing one to simply relax and take in all of the natural beauty.
