There are great restaurants, great views, and it's a popular city break vacation destination all year round. If you want to get a good room in a good but cheap hotel, you need to plan ahead and book ahead. San Francisco has plenty of hotels, but the prices are among the highest in the United States. It's the kind of city where you either hope for a last-minute deal where a hotel has vacancies, or you book well ahead and get the best price you can in advance. Here are a few cheap but good San Francisco hotel recommendations, where you ought to be able to find a budget room at under $100 a night without sacrificing too much by way of comfort: Beresford Arms701 Post Street Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Beresford Arms has some of its standard rooms available for $99 out of the main vacation season, though prices can be much higher at busy times. At $99 it's a bargain, though, and just three blocks from Union Square and those cable cars. There are 95 rooms and suites, free internet in the lobby, complimentary morning coffee, tea and pastries, and a complimentary afternoon tea and wine social. Grant Plaza Hotel465 Grant Avenue In the heart of Chinatown, this has to be one of the best cheap hotel deals in San Francisco. The location is great, right in Chinatown, three blocks from Union Square, and one block from the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf. Although the rooms are a bit small and spartan, they are bright and clean, welcoming and modern. They all have private bathrooms, hair dryers, phones, data ports and color TV. Book ahead and go out of season, and there are some real deals to be had. Hotel Milano55 Fifth Street The Milano is a really stylish option, if you can get one of their bargain $99 rooms by booking ahead and visiting San Francisco out of high season. There are 108 spacious rooms, all with voice mail, modem, writing desk, safe, refrigerator, free daily paper, in-room movies, and even a Nintendo. There's also a 2-story fitness center, and the hotel location couldn't be better – right next to the San Francisco Centre. San Remo Hotel2237 Mason Street If you want to be close to Fisherman's Wharf, then it would be hard to beat the San Remo for the combination of location, comfort and budget price. The down side is that the 62 rooms are small (they say "cozy"), and bathrooms are shared, but if you don't mind this then you get a fine historic hotel, great location and real cheap room rates. So there are some good but cheap San Francisco hotels. None of these will disappoint, but consider booking ahead, and avoid the busy times of year.
