There are hundreds of places for fabulous desserts in Los Angeles. Yet, a summertime afternoon screams creamy ice cream. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but includes some of the finest homemade ice cream and unique decors among the plethora of choices.

Diddy Riese Cookies in Westwood

926 Broxton Avenue Westwood, California 90024. 310-208-0448.

Perhaps best known among college students Diddy Riese is a landmark in UCLA’s Westwood. The simple menu includes 10 kinds of warm cookies and 12 different Dreyer’s ice cream flavors. Their cookies are not the best cookies, and their ice cream is standard; however, the combination is magical…and you can’t beat the price. Three cookies for $1.00 or an ice cream sandwich with two cookies and a generous scoop of ice cream for $1.50 is easily the best deal in town. The pairings are endless: oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip cookies with espresso chip ice cream, cinnamon sugar and candy cookies with strawberry ice cream. While there is nearly always a line out of the door, an efficient and friendly staff gets the goods out at breakneck speed.

Bennett’s at the LA Farmer’s Market

6333 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles, California 90036. (Stall #548) 323-939-6786

The tag line reads, “Life is short; lick fast,” and which sets the mood for this no-frills ice cream kiosk. The offering vary base on season, including the winter classics of pumpkin and peppermint during the holiday season, but their tasty root-beer float is offered year round. The quality and freshness of the ingredients shines through in this good ‘ol homemade ice cream. The ice cream is creamy, the cones are crunchy, and the names are fresh. Some popular choices include Choffee Choffee, a mix of chocolate and coffee ice cream with a generous amount of chocolate covered toffee peanuts, or perhaps your fancy a Fancy Nancy, coffee ice cream with caramel and bananas. While the prices are a bit higher than the neighboring Baskin-Robbins, the portions are generous and fresh.

MILK an Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor

7290 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036. 323-939-6455

This nouveau take on the old-fashioned soda shop sells more than just ice cream, but the draw is definitely the shakes and sundaes which are freshly made on the premises. The interior might be a bit stark at first, but gleams in modern metallic and white wall décor. Their offerings include both classic treats like Banana splits and a few unconventional choices like the raspberry vanilla bon-bons. However, a must-try is the Milkie Way malt, made with the shops signature homemade vanilla ice cream, malted milk, chocolate chips and a caramel-chocolate swirl. It’s melt in your mouth delicious. The only downside to this delectable place? Parking.

Disney’s Soda Fountain in Hollywood

6834 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, California 90028. 323-817-1475

Reminiscent of a 1950’s old-fashioned soda fountain, this is a fun place to treat your Disney-loving kids. In typical Disney style the people are friendly, full of cheerful smiles and great with youngsters. The ice cream is typical standard fair, good and guilt inducing; the décor is all Disney-themed based on the current movie being shown at the attached El Capitan Theater. A classic favorite includes the Black and White sundae with both vanilla and chocolate ice cream and both marshmallow and hot fudge sauces.
